How Much Does Shower Installation Cost? UK Prices for 2026

A shower swap can be a £190 morning's work or a £6,000 rebuild. The difference is almost never the shower itself, and knowing which job you actually have is what stops a quote running away from you.

By the Nims Casa editorial team — written from professional cleaning experience and checked against our editorial standards.

The biggest cost driver in a shower job is not the shower. It is whether water and electricity already arrive where you want them, and whether anyone has to open a wall. Two houses on the same street, same unit, can be £280 and £3,100 apart on that basis alone.

Everything below reflects 2026 UK trade rates and merchant prices, VAT included. Bathrooms punish optimism, so these are honest ranges, not the cheerful bottom end.

The Typical UK Price Range in 2026

Shower installation spans roughly £190 to £7,800 depending on how much of the room you disturb. Identify your bracket before ringing anyone. If the shower is part of a wider job the trades overlap, as our bathroom remodel cost breakdown shows.

  • •Like-for-like electric shower swap, cable and pipework sound: £190 to £480, of which £110 to £210 is labour.
  • •New electric shower needing a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit: £550 to £1,150, driven by cable route length.
  • •Thermostatic bar mixer onto existing fixings: £160 to £520, a two-hour visit.
  • •Shower over an existing bath with a glass screen and tiled splash zone: £450 to £950.
  • •Bath removed, low-profile tray and enclosure fitted, walls retiled: £1,600 to £3,400.
  • •Concealed or digital shower, valve buried in the wall: £850 to £2,200.
  • •Fully tanked wet room with a graded floor and linear drain: £4,200 to £7,800.

Unit Costs and the Labour-to-Materials Split

On a straight swap, labour is 55 to 65 per cent of the bill: the unit is cheap, the skill is in the isolation, the seal and the certificate. On a bath-to-shower conversion it flips, with tray, enclosure, boards and tiles taking half.

  • •8.5kW electric shower unit £70 to £130; a 10.5kW thermostatic model £210 to £420.
  • •Thermostatic bar mixer £75 to £260 for Bristan, Mira or Triton; £280 to £500 for Grohe or Hansgrohe.
  • •Low-profile stone resin tray, 1200 x 800mm, £190 to £360; an 8mm walk-in glass panel £180 to £460.
  • •12.5mm backer board £19 to £28 a sheet, three or four per cubicle; tanking kit £65 to £120.
  • •10mm² cable £7 to £9 a metre, a 45A pull-cord £20 to £35, an RCBO £25 to £40.
  • •Plumber £45 to £75 an hour, or £230 to £330 a day outside London and £330 to £460 inside the M25.
  • •Tiler £38 to £60 per m² supplied and fitted; electrician £260 to £360 a day plus £60 to £120 for Part P notification.
  • •Waste: £90 to £160 for a builder's bag, £230 to £360 for a four-yard skip and permit.

What Actually Moves the Price

Quotes diverge for structural reasons, not sales reasons. When two prices sit £900 apart, one of the items below is the explanation. Rates by job are broken down in our guide to plumbers' rates.

  • •Moving the waste. Within 300mm of the existing trap is cheap; crossing joists adds £250 to £700 and a lifted floor.
  • •Your water system. A gravity-fed loft tank needs a twin-impeller pump at £190 to £450, plus £280 to £520 to fit and wire. A combi cannot run a power shower.
  • •Uprating the kilowatts. Going 8.5kW to 10.5kW means the existing 6mm² cable is undersized, so that circuit gets rewired, not reused.
  • •Wall build-up. Dot-and-dab plasterboard over solid brick has voids behind it; a good fitter strips back to masonry and boards out, adding half a day.
  • •Tile format. Mosaic and 1200mm large-format porcelain each add 30 to 45 per cent to tiling labour, as our tile installation cost guide sets out.
  • •Region and asbestos. The South East runs 25 to 40 per cent above the North East, Wales and Northern Ireland; disturbing pre-2000 Artex adds £350 to £800.

Three Worked Examples

Three complete jobs with the arithmetic shown, so you can see which line in your quote does the damage.

  • •Cardiff, 1970s semi, like-for-like electric shower. Unit £168, sundries £22, electrician three hours at £42 with the existing 10mm² circuit tested £126, minor works certificate £70. Total £386.
  • •Sheffield terrace, bath out and 1200 x 800 walk-in in. Tray £245, glass £320, waste £34, boards and tanking £170, 9m² porcelain at £26 £234, adhesive £58. Plumber two days £540, tiler a day and a half £345, builder's bag £120. Total £2,066.
  • •Kingston upon Thames, first-floor wet room. Former and drain £520, tanking £180, 14m² tiles at £42 £588, digital valve and head £760. Plumber two days £780, tiler three days £1,020, electrician half day £180, making good £420, skip £310. Total £4,758.

The Renter-Safe Version: Upgrades That Protect Your Deposit

Tenants cannot lawfully alter plumbing or electrics, and under Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 those repairs are the landlord's duty anyway. A leaking mixer or a dead electric shower is a repair request, not a project. Everything below is reversible and, with the originals boxed and labelled, invisible at check-out.

Drilling tiles, isolating the mains, chasing a wall or replacing a fixed valve all need written landlord consent — an email reply is enough, and it is the difference between an improvement and a deduction. If mould at the bead is the real complaint, resealing silicone around a bath is maintenance worth agreeing in writing first.

  • •Swap the head and hose on a bar mixer: both unscrew by hand, £18 to £55, four minutes. Keep the originals.
  • •In a hard-water area, a filtered head at £25 to £60 slows the limescale scarring you will be judged on.
  • •A tension rod and curtain instead of drilling for a screen: £14 to £35, no fixings, no holes.
  • •No-drill caddies and adhesive shelves at £8 to £20 replace anything you were tempted to screw into tile.
  • •Photograph the original fittings on day one and the reinstatement on the last.

How to Sanity-Check a Quote

A trustworthy quote reads like a shopping list, not a single figure. Ask for days on site and the day rate stated separately from materials, with model numbers so you can price them yourself. Confirm in writing who removes the old suite and who pays for the skip, because that £300 has a habit of appearing at the end.

Check the electrician against NICEIC or NAPIT and the plumber against WaterSafe, and confirm Part P notification is included, not extra. A deposit above 25 per cent is a red flag on a job this size, and three itemised quotes beat one detailed one — our method for comparing contractor estimates works line by line.

How We Priced This

Three sources, sampled February and March 2026: itemised quotes from householders across eleven UK postcode areas, published day rates from plumbing, tiling and electrical firms there, and shelf prices at Screwfix, Toolstation and Wickes. Totals include VAT at 20 per cent, though a sole trader under the £90,000 threshold will not charge it.

Sanitaryware and glass have been broadly flat since 2024 while labour has climbed 4 to 6 per cent a year, so the labour figures date first. If your quote sits outside these ranges, ask what is different about your house before assuming anyone is wrong. Our walk-in shower design and cost guide covers the layout decisions that lock in the price early.
