Walk-In Shower Cost: UK 2026 Prices, Wet Rooms and Design Choices
The difference between a £2,000 walk-in shower and an £8,000 one is almost never the glass. It is what is under the floor, and you can work that out before anyone quotes.
By the Nims Casa editorial team — written from professional cleaning experience and checked against our editorial standards.

Two houses on the same street can get quotes four thousand pounds apart for what looks like an identical shower. The tray, the panel and the tiles barely move the number. What moves it is the floor construction and where the existing waste sits, and both are things you can establish in ten minutes with a torch and a screwdriver handle.
Work out which of three jobs you are actually buying before you ring anyone. Quotes for the wrong one are worthless, and it is the single commonest reason UK bathroom budgets double halfway through.
First, Work Out Which Job You Are Buying
Tap the bathroom floor with a screwdriver handle and find the soil stack. Those two answers decide almost everything.
- •Dull, solid, no movement, ground floor of a 1960s-or-later house: concrete slab. A tray swap is cheap; true level access means either cutting the slab or accepting a small step.
- •Hollow and slightly springy, or any upstairs bathroom: suspended timber. A shower tray drops straight in, but a level-access wet room means cutting into joists for a former, which is where the money goes.
- •Bath waste within a metre of the stack and on the same wall: you are in the cheap bracket. Every metre you move it adds pipework, floor lifting and a day.
- •Waste below the level of the outgoing drain, common in ground-floor rear extensions: you need a pumped waste, and that is £400 to £900 before anyone lays a tile.
- •Nobody in the house has a mobility need and the bath is going for good: read walk-in shower versus bathtub first, because a single-bathroom house without a bath does lose resale appeal.
Walk-In Shower Cost: The UK Ranges
Fitted prices for 2026, Midlands baseline, including labour but assuming the room is otherwise sound.
- •Bath out, low-profile tray and glass panel in, existing tiles kept: £1,200 to £1,900.
- •Bath out, tray and panel in, shower area retiled: £1,800 to £3,500.
- •Level-access shower using a tray former on a timber floor, area tanked: £4,500 to £8,000.
- •Whole room tanked as a wet room, new floor and wall tiling throughout: £6,000 to £11,000.
- •Add £900 to £2,000 if a pumped waste, a new circuit or a moved soil connection is involved.
Unit Costs and the Labour Split
Materials look alarming in a merchant's basket and then turn out to be the minority of the bill. On a tray swap expect roughly 55 to 60 per cent labour; on a tanked wet room, 60 to 70 per cent, because tanking and tiling are almost pure man-hours.
- •Stone-resin low-profile tray, 1700 x 700: £180 to £450.
- •Wet room tray former plus linear drain: £350 to £700.
- •Tanking membrane, primer and tape for 5 m²: £120 to £250.
- •8mm toughened walk-in panel, 900mm: £150 to £350. A 10mm panel with a bracing bar: £300 to £600.
- •Concealed thermostatic valve and head: £180 to £600. A 9.5 kW electric shower: £120 to £300.
- •Porcelain wall tiles: £22 to £55 per m², or £40 to £90 for large format. Tiling labour: £45 to £75 per m², and tile installation costs break that down further.
- •Plumber: £300 to £420 a day. Electrician for the shower circuit: £250 to £400 a day. Skip: £220 to £350.
What Moves the Price
In rough order of impact on a typical UK bathroom.
- •Floor construction. Getting a former and its gully into 220mm joists without weakening them is a day of careful work; on a slab it is a morning.
- •Distance to the soil stack. Beyond a metre you are lifting boards or chasing the slab.
- •Whether the whole room is tanked or only the shower zone. Tanking a 2.2 x 2.0 m room adds two days and about £900.
- •Large-format tiles. They need a flatter substrate, so add a day of boarding and levelling.
- •Extraction. If the room has no mechanical extract, Part F wants 15 litres per second, and a decent fan fitted runs £180 to £400.
- •Region. London and the South East run 25 to 35 per cent above these figures; much of the North and Midlands sits 10 to 15 per cent below.
Design Choices That Change the Bill
Small UK bathrooms reward restraint. The expensive-looking decisions are usually the cheap ones.
- •Keep the shower where the bath's tap end was. Reusing the waste run is worth several hundred pounds and costs nothing in looks.
- •A single 1000 to 1200mm panel with no door suits a standard 1700mm alcove, keeps the room open and is the cheapest screen you can buy.
- •A half-height dwarf wall at £250 to £500 controls spray better than an extra 300mm of glass and gives you somewhere to hide pipework.
- •On a wet room floor use 300 x 300 tiles or mosaic. Large formats cannot follow the fall to the gully without lipping.
- •A recessed niche costs £150 to £300 in tiles and labour against £25 for a corner caddy. Worth it once, not three times.
- •Slip rating matters more than finish: ask for R10 or better on the floor, whatever the showroom sample looks like.
Three Worked Examples
Real job shapes, priced with the unit costs above.
- •1930s semi, upstairs, timber floor. Bath swapped for a 1700 x 700 tray and 900mm panel, shower zone retiled to 8 m². Materials £1,050, labour £1,780, skip £250. Total £3,080 over four days.
- •1970s bungalow, concrete slab. Full level-access wet room, 2.2 x 1.9 m, former and linear drain, whole room tanked, R11 floor tile, one grab rail. Materials £2,300, labour £4,700, sundries £400. Total £7,400 over nine days.
- •Victorian terrace, ground-floor rear extension, waste below drain level. Pumped waste, 1600 x 800 tray, dwarf wall, half-tiled. Materials £1,500, labour £2,750, pump £400. Total £4,650 over six days.
Sanity-Checking a Quote, and How We Priced This
Ask three questions and most quotes sort themselves out. Which tanking system is named, by manufacturer? Tanking paint alone on a timber floor is a red flag. How many working days, honestly? A properly tanked wet room is six to nine days, so a three-day quote has left out cure times. And what fall is being set across the shower area? Anything shallower than about 1:50 will pond.
Then check the shape of the numbers. Labour should be 55 to 70 per cent of the total; if materials dominate, you are being sold a suite rather than a shower. Compare against wider bathroom refit costs and published plumber day rates before you sign.
One relief almost nobody mentions: where the work is a bathroom adaptation for a disabled person, the qualifying elements can be zero-rated for VAT under HMRC's rules, and adaptations for over-60s can attract the reduced 5 per cent rate. On the bungalow example that is roughly £900 off. Our guide to making a bathroom accessible covers what qualifies.
Methodology: unit prices are 2026 merchant list prices from mainstream UK suppliers, labour is drawn from quoted day rates for independent fitters in the Midlands, and the job durations are working days on site rather than elapsed calendar time. Treat every figure as a starting point, not a promise.
